Penn Lightweight Rowing Team Accused of Racist Remarks and Inadequate Response by University

Penn Rowing Program Under Fire for Alleged Racist Remarks

The Penn rowing program is facing backlash after allegations of racist remarks made by members of the men’s lightweight rowing team towards Black women rowers surfaced. According to sources close to the program, racial slurs, including the N-word, were used by a member of the lightweight rowing team, with claims of inadequate response from the coaching staff and university officials.

The incidents, which occurred during the 2023-24 season, have shed light on a toxic environment within the rowing program, with one source stating that Penn Athletics has been slow to address athlete safety concerns. The alleged racist remarks were said to be part of a larger pattern of offensive behavior that was tolerated within the team.

One victim of the verbal abuse, a Black member of the women’s rowing team, recounted specific instances where she and her teammate were targeted by the lightweight rower. The rower allegedly made derogatory comments about their appearances, including a reference to the movie “12 Years a Slave.”

Despite efforts by the women’s rowing team to seek significant disciplinary action against the lightweight rower, including a suspension, the response from Penn Athletics was deemed inadequate. The rower was temporarily removed from the team and required to undergo sensitivity education and issue an apology, but sources close to the team expressed dissatisfaction with the severity of the punishment.

The lack of communication and support from coaches and administrators throughout the process has left victims feeling betrayed and unsafe. Despite undergoing restorative training, the lightweight rower’s return to the team blindsided one of the primary victims, who expressed frustration over the lack of accountability for his actions.

In response to the allegations, Penn Athletics emphasized their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion but declined to provide details on the specific conduct case due to privacy laws. The handling of the situation has raised concerns about the program’s culture and the prioritization of image over addressing systemic issues of racism and discrimination.

As the rowing program grapples with the fallout from these allegations, victims of the verbal abuse continue to seek justice and accountability for the emotional toll they have endured. The lack of a satisfactory resolution has left them feeling unsupported and unsafe within the program.
