Navy Heavyweight Crew Team Competes Against Syracuse and Cornell for Goes Trophy and Stagg Team Points Cup
In a thrilling day of racing on Onondaga Lake, the No. 11 Navy heavyweight crew team faced off against No. 7 Syracuse and No. 14 Cornell in a series of five intense contests. The competition was fierce as the teams battled it out for the Goes Trophy and Stagg Team Points Cup, with Syracuse ultimately emerging victorious with three varsity eight wins.
The first varsity race set the tone for the day, with Syracuse taking control and crossing the finish line with a time of 5:40.6. Navy put up a strong fight to secure the runner-up spot, finishing just 1.8 seconds behind the Orange. The second varsity race saw Syracuse continue their dominance, with a time of 5:45.4, followed closely by Cornell and Navy.
The third varsity race was no different, as Syracuse once again claimed the top spot with a time of 5:49.4. Navy and Cornell followed in second and third place, respectively. The fourth varsity race was the closest of the day, with Cornell edging out Syracuse by just 0.8 seconds.
Despite the tough competition, Navy managed to secure a win in the fifth varsity four race, finishing with a time of 6:37.8. Head Coach Rob Friedrich expressed pride in the team’s performance but acknowledged that there is room for improvement.
Looking ahead, Navy will host their final regular season regatta next Saturday against Harvard and Penn, with the Adams Cup on the line. The team is eager to continue working hard and improving as they prepare for the Eastern Sprints.
