Navy Lightweight Rowing Team Wins Eads Johnson Cup against Yale

Navy Lightweight Rowing Team Claims Eads Johnson Cup in Thrilling Victory Over Yale

In an exhilarating day of racing at Mercer Lake, the No. 7 Navy lightweight rowing team made history by defeating No. 5 Yale to capture the Eads Johnson Cup for the first time since 2010. The Mids’ first varsity eight put on a stellar performance, edging out the Bulldogs in a nail-biting finish to secure the prestigious trophy.

Head coach Shawn Bagnall expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “This early season racing with Yale is always extremely competitive, and this evening was no exception. All three races were very tight from start to finish, and while not on the right side of the results every race, we gained further understanding of what we need to improve training toward our championship season.”

The action kicked off with a close third varsity eight race, with Yale narrowly defeating Navy by 2.27 seconds. The Bulldogs continued their winning streak in the second varsity eight race, clinching the Jon Von Amringe Team Points Cup with a time of 5:55.22.

However, the highlight of the day came in the first varsity eight race, where Navy fought tooth and nail to outpace Yale and claim victory with a time of 5:48.81. This win marked the first time in 14 years that the Mids have brought the Eads Johnson Cup back to Hubbard Hall.

Looking ahead, Navy will face off against Columbia in their next road matchup at Overpeck Park in Leonia, N.J. The team is eager to build on their success and continue their winning momentum as they progress through the season.

With a strong showing against a formidable opponent like Yale, the Navy lightweight rowing team has set the stage for an exciting and competitive season ahead. Fans can expect more thrilling races and impressive performances from this talented group of athletes.
