Lakeland Rowing Club Making Rowing More Accessible with Bursary Fund

Lakeland Rowing Club in Keswick is making waves with their new initiative to make rowing more affordable and accessible to all. The club’s chair, Julia McCumiskey, is passionate about the benefits of rowing and is determined to break the stereotype of rowing being an elitist sport.

McCumiskey stated, “Rowing has a reputation as an elitist sport, but that isn’t the case at all. Our members are ordinary, local people who enjoy spending time on the water amid some of the country’s loveliest scenery. Rowing is great low-impact, full-body exercise, whatever your fitness level. It’s also a fabulous way to de-stress.”

The club usually charges £110 for an adult weekend learn-to-row course and £40 for juniors, including the use of club facilities and equipment for a year. However, they are now offering bursaries to make rowing even more accessible to those facing financial hardship. The first bursary recipient, Aggie, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to join the club and experience rowing on Derwentwater.

Lakeland Rowing Club will be holding adult learn-to-row courses throughout the summer, as well as junior courses for Year 7 students and above. Those interested in taking up rowing can find more information on the club’s website.

With their commitment to inclusivity and affordability, Lakeland Rowing Club is opening up the world of rowing to a wider audience and ensuring that everyone has the chance to experience the joy of rowing on the beautiful waters of Derwentwater.
