Balraj Panwar Secures India’s Inaugural Rowing Quota for Paris Olympics

In a historic moment for Indian rowing, Balraj Panwar has secured India’s first-ever quota in rowing for the Paris Olympics. The 25-year-old Indian Army rower showcased exceptional skill and determination at the 2024 World Asian and Oceanian Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Chungju, South Korea, on Sunday.

Panwar’s impressive performance in the men’s single scull event saw him clinch the third position with a timing of 7 minutes and 1.27 seconds in the 2000m race, earning him the coveted Olympic berth. With the top five finishers in the category securing a spot at the Olympics, Panwar’s achievement has ensured India’s representation in rowing at the upcoming Games.

Despite facing disappointment in the men’s lightweight double sculls event, where Ujjwal Kumar and Arvind Singh finished third, missing out on the Olympic quota, India’s rowing prospects look promising with Panwar’s historic feat.

In addition to Panwar’s success, India also celebrated a gold medal in the men’s double scull event at the Asian Rowing Cup, thanks to the stellar performance of Salman Khan and Nitin Deol.

Hailing from Karnal, Haryana, Panwar’s journey to securing India’s inaugural rowing quota for the Paris Olympics is a testament to his dedication and talent. Overcoming a slow start in the race, Panwar displayed remarkable strength and strategy to claim the lead by the halfway mark, ultimately finishing third behind Vladislav Yakovlev of Kazakhstan and Memo Memo of Indonesia.

With Panwar’s achievement, Indian rowing has reached new heights, setting the stage for an exciting Olympic campaign in Paris. As the countdown to the Games begins, all eyes will be on Panwar and the Indian rowing team as they aim to make their mark on the international stage.
