George and Wynne-Griffith Trusting Themselves Ahead of European Rowing Championships

Wynne Griffith and George Prepare for European Rowing Championships

Tom George is gearing up for the European Rowing Championships in Szeged, putting a pre-season wobble firmly behind him. The 29-year-old from Cheltenham has faced challenging weather conditions during his winter training at Caversham, but he and partner Ollie Wynne-Griffith managed to clinch World Cup gold in Varese in the men’s pair.

Despite the setbacks in training, George remains optimistic about their chances at the upcoming championships. “We aren’t back on top yet, the Europeans is the big one for us for now before the Olympics,” he said. “Preparation hasn’t been amazing so to have a positive weekend is really important. We’ve learned to trust ourselves and back ourselves and sometimes it is good to do that.”

The duo heads to Hungary as the reigning European silver medallists in the event, having secured second place in Bled last year. They also have a World Championship silver from Belgrade in 2023 under their belts, along with this season’s gold in Italy.

George emphasized the importance of trust between him and Wynne-Griffith, who have known each other since their school days. Their partnership has been fruitful, breaking the British record on their way to World Cup gold last year.

As they prepare for their second Olympic Games together, the pair is focused on staying in their lane and executing their race plan. Wynne-Griffith highlighted the middle kilometer as a key focus of their winter training, aiming to improve their performance in the crucial stage of the race.

With the support of British Rowing and the National Lottery Sports Fund, George and Wynne-Griffith are ready to take on the competition at the European Rowing Championships and continue their pursuit of success on the water.
