Bullis Track and Field Team Breaks National Record at Florida Relays
Bullis track and field coach Joe Lee couldn’t contain his excitement as he celebrated in the stands of the University of Florida’s James G. Pressly stadium. Channeling the iconic moves of coaching legend Jim Valvano, Lee was elated after the Bulldogs’ 4×400-meter girls’ relay team made history at the Florida Relays in Gainesville.
The quartet of Payton Payne, Kennedy Brown, Sydney Sutton, and Morgan Rothwell clocked in at an impressive 3 minutes 35.23 seconds, breaking the national high school record set back in 2004 by Long Beach Poly. The girls shaved over two seconds off their own time from the previous year, showcasing their dedication and hard work.
Despite facing tough competition from Miami Northwestern and Montverde Academy, the Bulldogs rallied in the final stretch, with Rothwell anchoring the team and securing the record with a time of 53.37 seconds. The performance not only outpaced collegiate teams at the event but also solidified their place in track and field history.
Meanwhile, at the same event, Bullis athlete Quincy Wilson set a national record in the boys’ 400-meter race, clocking in at an impressive 45.19 seconds. Wilson’s stellar performance not only exceeded his previous personal best but also secured him a spot at the Olympic Trials in Oregon, a goal he had set for himself.
With these remarkable achievements, Bullis continues to solidify its reputation as a powerhouse in high school track and field. Coach Lee and the entire team are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to what the rest of the season holds for them.
