Rebecca Shorten Leads British Rowing Team to Victory in Varese
Belfast rower Rebecca Shorten is gearing up for the European Rowing Championships with her eyes set on this summer’s Olympics. Shorten, along with her teammates Esme Booth, Samantha Redgrave, and Helen Glover, kicked off the season in style with a World Rowing Cup victory in Varese last weekend.
The quartet will be competing for gold in Hungary after a successful preliminary race win over reigning champions Romania. Shorten acknowledges the importance of continuous improvement and hard work leading up to the Olympics in Paris.
Reflecting on their recent success, Shorten stated, “We have been doing well in training. Varese was a good run and I think we have got that little bit of magic gel together which is really nice to have this early on. There is still some more to come I’m sure, we have a big training block coming up.”
With just three months left until the Games, Shorten and her team are focused on laying down another marker at the European Championships. Their goal is to secure a podium finish after narrowly missing out on a medal in Tokyo.
Double Olympic champion Helen Glover emphasized the importance of consistency and continuous improvement, stating, “It is important to keep the consistency now so we are not peaking for this, we are peaking for 100 days time. We haven’t been together that long so finding out where we are and what we need to work on is definitely step one.”
As they continue their journey towards the Olympics, Shorten and her teammates are determined to put in the hard work and dedication needed to achieve their goals. Fans can follow their progress and show support for the GB Rowing Team by visiting https://britishrowing.org/.
