India’s Balraj Panwar Secures Paris Olympics Quota in Rowing
In a historic moment for Indian rowing, Balraj Panwar secured India’s first Paris Olympics quota by finishing third in the men’s single scull event at the 2024 World Asian and Oceanian Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Chungju, South Korea. The 25-year-old Indian Army rower clocked 7:01.27 minutes in the 2000m race to seal the quota, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat.
Panwar’s journey to the Olympics quota was not easy, as he narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in his maiden appearance at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year. However, his determination and hard work paid off as he secured the coveted quota for India in rowing.
In the men’s single scull event, the top five finishers make the Olympics cut, and Panwar’s impressive performance ensured his qualification for the Paris Olympics. India will now have a solitary entry in rowing at the quadrennial extravaganza slated to begin on July 26.
While India failed to qualify in the men’s lightweight double sculls event, where the top two earn the quota, the duo of Ujjwal Kumar and Arvind Singh put up a commendable performance to finish third. Despite missing out on qualification, their efforts were commendable and showcased the growing talent in Indian rowing.
Panwar’s achievement comes on the heels of India’s gold medal win in the men’s double scull event at the Asian Rowing Cup, further highlighting the country’s prowess in the sport. With Panwar leading the charge, Indian rowing is set to make a mark on the international stage at the Paris Olympics.
