North Carolina Field Hockey Coach Erin Matson Denied Opportunity to Try Out for U.S. Olympic Team
North Carolina field hockey coach Erin Matson, a standout player in the sport, has been dealt a disappointing blow as she revealed that she will not be allowed to try out for the U.S. Olympic team during its trials this weekend. The 24-year-old, who recently led the Tar Heels to a national championship in her first season as head coach, expressed her feelings on the matter in a social media statement, stating, “Although it leaves my heart heavy, I have moved forward.”
The decision was reportedly based on a selection process established by USA Field Hockey in June 2023, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Despite this setback, Matson had recently returned to play for the U.S. Team at the Pan Am Cup in Canada last month.
The News and Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, shared that USA Field Hockey is open to further discussion regarding Matson’s eligibility. However, Matson indicated that any potential involvement in international competitions would likely be for the 2026 or 2028 games.
Matson boasts an impressive resume as a four-time national champion player, with three of those titles coming in unbeaten seasons. She concluded her playing career in 2022 as a three-time national player of the year and the all-time leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Tournament history.
Support for Matson has poured in from various sources, including two members of UNC’s Board of Trustees who have voiced their backing for her. Chairman John Preyer questioned the decision, asking, “Why is US Field Hockey denying the greatest American player in history a chance to compete for a spot on the Olympic team?”
As Matson navigates this disappointing turn of events, her resilience and determination are sure to shine through as she continues to make her mark on the field hockey world.
