Canton Tuskies Sled Hockey Team Prepares to Make Debut in Fall 2024
The cold winter air inside the Center Ice Sports Complex in Jackson did not deter Canton Tuskies players Jacob Baker, Brian Brately, and Patrick Brennan as they prepared for a photo shoot on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024. These three athletes are on a mission to bring sled hockey for disabled athletes to the area this fall, and they are determined to make it happen.
Having played sled hockey for years on teams outside the area, Baker, Brately, and Brennan understand the impact that the sport can have on participants. For Baker, sled hockey helped boost his confidence and allowed him to make lifelong friends. Brennan emphasized the sense of independence and camaraderie that sled hockey provides, while Brately highlighted the social aspect and support system that comes with being part of a team.
The trio’s passion for sled hockey led them to create the Canton Tuskies, with the goal of introducing the sport to the Center Ice Sports Complex. Despite the challenges of starting a team from scratch, including securing funding for ice time, equipment, and travel expenses, the three friends have been working tirelessly to make their dream a reality.
With the support of the community and local businesses, the Canton Tuskies are gaining momentum as they prepare to kick off their inaugural season this fall. The team’s website offers information on how to get involved or make a donation, and the players are excited to see the positive impact that sled hockey can have on disabled athletes in the area.
As they continue to work towards their goal of starting play in the fall of 2024, the Canton Tuskies are determined to raise awareness and funds to support their mission. With the support of the community behind them, Baker, Brately, and Brennan are confident that they can make a difference in the lives of disabled athletes in the area through the power of sled hockey.
