Lucky Devils Adult Hockey Tournament in Mitchell Raises Funds for Sport’s Growth

The Lucky Devils Adult Hockey Tournament in Mitchell, South Dakota, is not your average hockey event. Stacy Murtha, a hockey enthusiast and Mitchell native, has been instrumental in growing the tournament into a significant event on the community’s hockey calendar. With 20 teams across four divisions and 37 games played over the weekend, the tournament is a showcase of talent and passion for the sport.

Murtha’s dedication to hockey dates back to his childhood days skating around Monroe Park. As a youth coach for 20 years, he instilled his love for the game in his own children and has been a driving force behind the growth of youth and adult hockey in Mitchell since the construction of the Mitchell Activities Center in 1995.

The Lucky Devils tournament, now in its 13th year, serves as a fundraiser for Mitchell hockey’s youth association, the arena, and the adult league. Murtha’s commitment to the sport goes beyond organizing the tournament; he has been involved in various initiatives to improve hockey facilities and amenities in the community.

The tournament features top-tier competition in the A Division, with former Division I players and University of North Dakota alumni showcasing their skills. The event also includes divisions for players of all levels, ensuring a competitive and inclusive atmosphere for participants.

Teams from across the region, including South Dakota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, come together to compete in the tournament. With no spectator fee, the event is open to the public, allowing hockey fans to witness the excitement firsthand.
