Sheffield Steelers Complete Elite League Grand Slam with Play-off Final Victory
On 21 April 2024, the Sheffield Steelers made history by completing the Elite League Grand Slam with a 3-1 victory over the Belfast Giants in the Play-off final at the Motorpoint Arena.
The Steelers got off to a strong start with Daniel Ciampini scoring on the power play in the opening period, followed by a quickfire goal from Mikko Juusola. Despite Blake Speers pulling one back for the Giants at the end of the second period, Sheffield secured the win with Kevin Tansey’s empty-net goal late in the game.
This victory not only secured the Play-off title for the Steelers but also completed their Grand Slam, as they had previously won the regular season title and the Challenge Cup. This achievement mirrored the Giants’ success from the previous season.
The game was not without controversy, as a penalty call on Greg Printz proved to be decisive in the Steelers’ favor. Printz was assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding, a call that was disputed by Giants coach Adam Keefe. Despite the setback, Keefe acknowledged that his team had their chances on the power play but failed to capitalize.
The Giants fought hard to equalize in the final period but were unable to break through the Steelers’ defense. Tansey’s empty-net goal sealed the victory and secured the Grand Slam for Sheffield, making them only the fourth team in Elite League history to achieve this feat.
With this historic win, the Sheffield Steelers solidified their place in Elite League history and cemented their status as one of the league’s most dominant teams.
