NEW DELHI: In a significant development, midfielder Salima Tete has been named as the captain of the 24-person Indian women’s hockey team for the upcoming FIH Pro League matches in Belgium and England. The talented player takes over the reins from Salima Punia, who previously led the team.
Expressing her excitement and gratitude for the new role, Salima Tete stated, “I am happy that I have been appointed to lead the team. It is a big responsibility and I am looking forward to this new role. We have a strong squad and it’s a mix of experienced and young players.”
The team will be led by Salima Tete, with Navneet Kaur serving as her deputy for the tour. The squad has undergone a few changes, with defender Gurjit Kaur, mid-fielders Sonika and Nisha, and striker Beauty Dungdung being replaced by Mahima Chaudhary, Manisha Chauhan, Pretti Dubey, and Deepika Soreng.
The matches in Belgium are set to kick off on May 22, followed by the England leg starting on June 1. India will face tough competition against teams like Argentina, Belgium, Great Britain, and Germany during the Pro League matches.
