Denver Pioneers Standouts Rizzo and Buium Sign NHL Contracts After National Title Win

In a move that comes as no surprise to hockey fans, University of Denver juniors Massimo Rizzo and Shai Buium have officially signed entry-level contracts with NHL teams following their impressive performance in leading the Pioneers to their 10th national title.

Rizzo, a forward from Burnaby, British Columbia, has signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers. The 22-year-old was a key contributor to the Pioneers’ success this past season, finishing as the team’s third-highest scorer with 44 points. Rizzo, who was originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2019 before being traded to the Flyers, has proven himself as a valuable asset on the ice and will undoubtedly make an impact at the professional level.

Buium, a defenseman from San Diego, has inked a three-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings that will kick off in the 2024-25 season. The 21-year-old had a standout season with the Pioneers, setting career highs in goals, assists, and points. Buium, who was selected 36th overall by the Red Wings in 2021, has shown tremendous growth and potential throughout his time at DU.

Both Rizzo and Buium played crucial roles in Denver’s championship run, and their success at the collegiate level has paved the way for promising careers in the NHL. Fans can expect to see these talented young players make a significant impact on their respective teams in the seasons to come.
