Deaf Athlete Katelyn Koester Shines on the Ice at International Hockey Tournament
Amherst Native Katelyn Koester Shines on the Ice with U.S. Women’s National Deaf Hockey Team
AMHERST, N.Y. — Katelyn Koester, a native of Amherst, has defied the odds and overcome challenges to become a standout athlete in the world of sports. Born deaf, Koester has always had a passion for athletics, participating in hockey, softball, and other sports throughout her life. With the help of her cochlear implant, she was able to compete on hearing teams well into college before joining deaf teammates in recent years.
Koester’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring, as she now proudly represents the U.S. Women’s National Deaf Hockey Team at the Jeff Sauer International Deaf Hockey Series held at Northtown Center. The tournament brings together deaf hockey teams from around the world for a four-day competition, honoring the legacy of the late Jeff Sauer, a renowned coach for hockey players with disabilities.
For Koester, the transition from playing with hearing teammates to deaf teammates has been a unique and rewarding experience. She recalls the differences in communication on the ice, such as using flashing lights instead of hearing the referee’s whistle. Despite these differences, Koester embraces the opportunity to compete alongside her deaf peers and showcase her skills on the ice.
After playing softball at RIT and transferring to Gallaudet University to play with the Bisons, Koester has continued to excel in her athletic career. Recently awarded ACHA Women’s Division II Player of the Year at Niagara University, Koester’s dedication and talent have not gone unnoticed.
As Koester continues to make her mark in the world of sports, she hopes to inspire others to see past differences and embrace the power of unity and competition in sports. With her positive attitude and determination, Koester is a shining example of perseverance and passion in the face of adversity.
