NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s Vision for Salt Lake City Arena District
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman doesn’t want any arena drama in Salt Lake City, and after the recent relocation of the Coyotes to Utah, negotiations are underway for a major renovation to the Delta Center and the development of a sports and entertainment district in downtown Salt Lake City.
The plan, which hinges on a key tax vote in July from the Salt Lake City Council, has faced significant political wrangling and disagreements on specifics. However, the plan aims to revitalize the heart of Utah’s capital with significant changes to the Salt Palace Convention Center and potential impacts on historic Japantown and Abravanel Hall.
Initially, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith envisioned a new arena for his hockey team in a suburban location, but pressure from the Legislature and concerns about the Jazz potentially leaving downtown led to a shift in plans. Smith now aims to renovate the Delta Center and create a vibrant sports and entertainment district in the heart of Salt Lake City.
The project, known as SB272, involves a revitalization zone in downtown Salt Lake City and a potential sales tax increase to fund developments in the area. The plan includes negotiations with various stakeholders, including the Salt Lake County, the City Council, and the state Legislature.
While some concerns have been raised about the potential impact on cultural centers and historic districts, supporters of the project see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalize downtown Salt Lake City and create a thriving sports and entertainment hub.
As negotiations continue and the project moves forward, the future of the Delta Center and downtown Salt Lake City hangs in the balance. With various stakeholders involved and public input being sought, the hope is that the project will bring positive change and economic growth to the city while preserving its cultural heritage.
