Hockey NSW and NSW Pride’s Greta Hayes Named LGBTQ+ Role Model of the Year
In a night filled with celebration and recognition, Hockey NSW and NSW Pride’s Greta Hayes stood out as she was awarded the prestigious title of LGBTQ+ Role Model of the Year at the 2024 Australian Pride in Sport Awards. This award highlights the importance of LGBTQ+ role models in promoting inclusivity within the world of sports.
Greta Hayes, a member of the Australian Hockeyroos team, has been a vocal advocate for inclusivity in sports. Her passion for creating a safe and supportive environment for all athletes was evident during last season’s NSW Pride, Pride in Pride round, where she played a pivotal role in the event’s success.
In a powerful social media post following the event, Greta emphasized the importance of inclusivity in sports, stating, “Sport provides a platform to do good and make change. No matter who we are, every person has the right to play sport and feel safe/supported to do so.”
Apart from her contributions to Hockey NSW and NSW Pride, Greta also serves as an AIS Thrive with Pride Ambassador. In March 2023, she spearheaded the organization of an international Pride match between the Hockeyroos and USA Hockey, further showcasing her commitment to inclusivity in sports.
The Australian Pride in Sport Awards, hosted by Adam Hills, recognizes achievements in promoting diversity and inclusion in Australian sports. Hockey NSW’s success was evident as a record 8 hockey organizations received recognition, with Hockey NSW achieving Bronze Tier Status in the Pride in Sport Index.
Hockey NSW’s affiliated club, Bentstix Hockey Club, also received Silver Tier Status, while Hockey Australia was honored with the highest PIS tier, Gold Tier Status.
Hockey NSW remains dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all participants, ensuring that hockey in NSW continues to be an inclusive sport for everyone. Congratulations to Greta Hayes on her well-deserved award and recognition as the LGBTQ+ Role Model of the Year.
