HeronBridge College Hosts Exciting HeronBridge Invitational Sports Event

The HeronBridge College campus in Fourways was alive with the sound of cheering and the clashing of sports equipment as over 1,000 talented sports players from schools across the country gathered for the highly anticipated HeronBridge Invitational. This prestigious annual event, powered by Planet Fitness, is in its third year and aims to showcase and celebrate the talents of sportsmen and sportswomen from all corners of South Africa.

Tash Marot, a representative from the school, expressed the school’s passion for sports and sports development, stating that the HeronBridge Invitational is a unique winter sports festival that brings together athletes from diverse backgrounds. The event kicked off with a development day where children from under-resourced schools had the opportunity to participate in coaching clinics with SA Rugby Legends, Proteas netball players, and SA national hockey players.

This year, the college welcomed 260 Grade 6 and 7 learners from surrounding schools, as well as some of the college’s prep children, to engage with some of the country’s top sports players. The matches that followed provided a platform for schools to compete against a variety of teams, offering a valuable experience for up-and-coming schools that may struggle to access traditional sports festivals.

The HeronBridge Invitational not only showcases the talent present in South African schools but also provides a platform for development schools to participate at no cost. With a focus on sportsmanship and education, the event aims to change lives through the power of sport.

The development day saw the presence of esteemed sports personalities such as SA Rugby Legends Dave von Hoesslin, Henno Mentz, and Mac Masina, as well as Proteas netball players Erin Burger and Jamie van Wyk. The event was a true celebration of sportsmanship and talent, highlighting the importance of sports in shaping young lives in South Africa.
