Geelong Hockey Icon Sets Unbeatable Record with 800th Match for Newtown City Hockey Club

Newtown City Hockey Club stalwart, Claire Barnes, has etched her name into the club’s history books by playing her 800th match, a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten. The league legend and grandmother took to the field against Geelong Jaguars on April 20, despite her team going down 2-4 in the division two clash.

Claire’s hockey journey began in 1978 when she followed her husband Alan into the sport, who was one of the founding members of Newtown City Hockey Club. Since then, Claire has rarely missed a game, only taking breaks to have her daughters Tracey and Kellie, who also followed in their parents’ footsteps.

Playing primarily as a goalkeeper, Claire’s impact on the club goes beyond the field. She is not only a player but also serves as the club’s president, junior coordinator, uniform manager, newsletter editor, and social media manager. Additionally, she is a committee member of the Geelong Hockey Association, overseeing social events and preparing fixtures for the season.

Claire’s dedication to the sport was recognized in 2017 when she received an OAM for her services to hockey. Despite her vast experience, she still looks up to club coach Deb Barnett, a dual Canadian Olympian, for guidance and inspiration.

As Claire reflects on her remarkable achievement, she emphasizes the importance of having fun and doing your best in the sport. For her, it’s not just about winning or losing but about enjoying the game and giving it your all.

With over 45 years of loyal service to Newtown City Hockey Club, Claire Barnes is truly a legend of Geelong hockey, and her 800th match milestone is a testament to her unwavering passion for the sport.
