Risca Hockey Club Faces Uncertain Future as Teams Close and Club Relocates

Risca Hockey Club, a beloved institution with over 100 players, is facing an uncertain future as they are forced to close several teams and relocate from their home of over 40 years at Risca Leisure Centre.

The club has been dealt a devastating blow as they were informed in July 2023 that their AstroTurf hockey pitch would be replaced by a 4G pitch, rendering it unsuitable for hockey. This unexpected news has led to the closure of the junior’s section and potentially their second senior team, resulting in a significant financial hit for the club.

Despite the challenges they are facing, Risca Hockey Club is determined to make the best of the situation. They are set to move to the Sue Noake Leisure Centre in Ystrad Mynach, a nine-mile journey from their current home. The community was invited to the club’s last training session to bid farewell to their beloved pitch.

The club’s spokesperson expressed their disappointment at the move, citing the difficulties it will pose for their junior and younger senior players who rely on transportation from parents. They have explored other potential pitches closer to Risca, but have faced obstacles such as noise pollution restrictions and inadequate facilities.

Risca Hockey Club is now seeking funding opportunities to support their relocation and ensure the club can continue to thrive. However, the loss of their junior’s section and potentially their second senior team will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the club and its players.

As they navigate this challenging period, Risca Hockey Club remains hopeful for the future and is determined to overcome these obstacles to continue their legacy in the sport.
