Scott Walford’s Journey from McGill Redbirds to AHL: A Story of Friendship and Success
McGill Redbirds defenceman Scott Walford’s journey from the NHL draft to signing an amateur tryout contract with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL is a testament to perseverance and friendship.
Walford, a Coquitlam, B.C. native, had his dreams of playing for the Montreal Canadiens dashed when they let his rights expire after drafting him in 2017. This disappointment led him to reevaluate his options before ultimately committing to McGill University’s hockey team.
Teaming up with longtime friend Mitchell Prowse, Walford found a sense of camaraderie and purpose at McGill, where they played together on the top defensive unit. Their bond, forged over years of shared experiences in British Columbia and the WHL, culminated in a bronze medal win at the U Sports Cup.
In a bittersweet moment, Walford and Prowse assisted on the game-winning goal in what could be their last competitive game together, as Walford embarks on his professional career with the Syracuse Crunch. Despite the uncertainty of their future paths, the two friends remain connected and determined to lace up their skates together once more, whether in the pros, an alumni game, or a beer league.
As Walford sets his sights on the AHL, he carries with him the memories of his time at McGill and the unwavering support of Prowse. Their story is a reminder of the power of friendship, resilience, and the enduring bond forged on the ice.
