Canada defeats Finland 4-1 in Women’s World Hockey Championship opener

In a thrilling start to the women’s world hockey championship, Canada secured a 4-1 victory over Finland with standout performances from Julia Gosling and Ella Shelton. Gosling, making her world championship debut, scored a crucial goal in the dying seconds of the second period to give Canada a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.

The 23-year-old forward from London, Ont., was joined on the ice by her cousin Nicole, who plays as a defender for the Canadian team. With her family, friends, and college teammates in attendance, Gosling described her goal as a momentum-shifter for the team.

Shelton also had a stellar game, contributing a goal and two assists to Canada’s victory. Brianne Jenner and Emma Maltais also found the back of the net for the Canadian team, while goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens made 33 saves to secure the win.

Despite the strong performance, Canadian head coach Troy Ryan highlighted areas for improvement, emphasizing the need for better puck management and defensive aggression. However, he praised the tenacity of the fourth line, particularly singling out Kristin O’Neill for her solid play.

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin made a return to the lineup after sitting out the previous game with an injury, with Ryan managing her minutes to ease her back into the tournament. With the win over Finland, Canada now turns its focus to their upcoming games against Switzerland, Czechia, and the United States in the group stage.

With a rich history of success in the women’s world hockey championship, Canada will be looking to add to their impressive tally of 12 gold medals. The tournament promises more exciting action as the top teams battle for supremacy on the ice.
