Remembering Bob Cole: Legendary “Hockey Night in Canada” Sportscaster from St. John’s, N.L.

Legendary sportscaster Bob Cole, known for his iconic “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcasts, passed away at the age of 90 in his beloved home city of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Cole’s connection to his home province was paramount to him, as he refused to leave despite numerous opportunities to further his career elsewhere.

Bob Hallett, a member of the band Great Big Sea, recalled flying back to St. John’s with Cole after gigs across the country. Despite his immense success in the broadcasting world, Cole remained rooted in Newfoundland, living in his own house and forcing the industry to adapt to him.

Cole’s daughter, Megan, described her father as embodying the spirit of Newfoundlanders – resilient, strong, and a little quirky. He spent his summers in rural Newfoundland, fishing in the province’s rivers and exploring its outport towns.

Known for his wit, passion, and trademark “Oh baby!” exclamations, Cole brought life to some of hockey’s biggest games over his more than half-century-long career. While he may not have showcased a strong Newfoundland accent on air, he certainly displayed the province’s knack for storytelling and engaging conversation.

Hallett praised Cole for disproving the notion that Newfoundlanders were somehow less than their national counterparts, showing that individuals from the province could compete on a world stage and succeed. Cole’s ability to adapt, charm, and bring his St. John’s wit to his work made him a beloved figure in both Newfoundland and the broader sports broadcasting world.

As Newfoundlanders and Canadians alike mourn the loss of a broadcasting legend, Bob Cole’s legacy as a proud Newfoundlander and St. John’s man will continue to inspire future generations in the province and beyond.
