Dwayne Johnson Claims First-Place Finish at LHSAA State Gymnastics Meet

St. Augustine High School’s Dwayne Johnson made a triumphant return to the LHSAA boys gymnastics scene, claiming the top spot in Level 10 at the State Gymnastics meet held at Baton Rouge High. Despite a shaky start, the sophomore athlete showcased his resilience and skill by dominating the final four apparatuses and finishing with a total of 71.700 points.

Reflecting on his victory, Johnson expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, especially after facing tough competition the previous year. “The senior got me last year, but I got it this time,” Johnson said. “It felt good to have a lot of people come out here and support me. I have a lot of family out here. You could hear them.”

In addition to Johnson’s individual success, Baton Rouge High emerged as the team champion, with their squad being the only full team in the meet. Despite the unique circumstances, BRHS coach Kevin Nee emphasized the importance of embracing the situation and celebrating the team’s victory.

While BRHS did not secure any individual titles, their strong performances across different levels showcased their depth and talent. Dutchtown’s Lucas Miller stood out with the top Level 4 all-around score, followed by several BRHS competitors who also excelled in their respective categories.

As the two-day meet concluded with the girls’ competition, athletes like Zareb Gray from BRHS expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete and improve. With a focus on personal growth and team camaraderie, the gymnasts left the competition with valuable experiences and a sense of accomplishment.
