Sunisa Lee Leads Initial Draw for U.S. Classic Gymnastics Event in Hartford
INDIANAPOLIS: Reigning Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Sunisa Lee is set to showcase her skills at the upcoming U.S. Classic in Hartford, Connecticut, next month. Lee, who made history by winning the coveted title at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is now aiming for a spot at the Paris Games later this year.
Despite facing health challenges in the past two years, the 21-year-old Lee recently competed at the Winter Cup in Louisville in February, showing her determination and resilience. Joining her in the initial lineup for the event scheduled for May 17-19 are other top gymnasts including 2020 Olympic floor champion Jade Carey, six-time world championship medalist Shilese Jones, former NCAA all-around champion Trinity Thomas, and four-time world championship medalist Leanne Wong.
The U.S. Classic serves as a crucial stepping stone towards the U.S. Olympic Trials set for late June in Minneapolis. USA Gymnastics will be updating the field every Friday, with the possibility of superstar Simone Biles, a six-time world all-around champion and seven-time Olympic medalist, joining the competition. Additionally, fans may see the return of 2012 Olympic champion Gabby Douglas, who has been granted permission to compete at both the U.S. Classic and the American Classic in Katy, Texas.
Douglas, who was sidelined by COVID-19 during the Winter Cup, is eager to make a comeback and has been training diligently at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Dallas. With the registration deadline approaching, gymnastics enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating an exciting lineup of athletes at the upcoming events.
