Gophers Gymnastics Team Finishes Fourth in NCAA Regional Finals, Softball Sweeps Buckeyes, Gophers Baseball Splits with Illinois
The 15th-ranked Gophers gymnastics team’s season came to a bittersweet end in the NCAA regional finals in Fayetteville, Ark. The team posted a strong score of 197.400 but finished fourth in the four-team final, narrowly missing out on advancing to the national meet in Fort Worth, Texas.
Despite the team’s overall placement, there were standout performances from individual gymnasts. Mya Hooten shined on the floor exercise, taking home an event title with a score of 9.950, her 10th of the season. Gianna Gerdes also had a solid showing, finishing fourth in the all-around with a score of 39.375.
In other sports news, the Gophers softball team had an impressive series sweep of Ohio State at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. In the first game, freshman Brooklyn Jones hit a grand slam to cap a 10-run inning, leading the team to a 14-6 victory. The second game saw a thrilling comeback from the Gophers, who rallied from an eight-run deficit to secure a 12-11 win.
Meanwhile, the Gophers baseball team split a doubleheader with Illinois at Siebert Field. After dropping the first game 7-4, the team bounced back with an 8-3 win in the second game, thanks in part to Brady Counsell’s impressive 4-for-4 performance at the plate.
Overall, it was a weekend of highs and lows for the Gophers athletic teams, with standout performances and thrilling comebacks showcasing the talent and resilience of Minnesota’s student-athletes.
