Michigan State Gymnastics Team Finishes Fourth in NCAA Gainesville Regional Final
The Michigan State gymnastics team made history this season with a program-best record of 29-7, but unfortunately, their journey came to an end with a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Gainesville Regional Final on Sunday. Despite the outcome, the Spartans put on a strong performance and showcased their talent throughout the competition.
The top two teams from the regional final, Florida and Utah, advanced to the NCAA Championships with impressive scores of 198.325 and 197.575, respectively. Missouri secured third place with a score of 197.325, while Michigan State finished fourth with a score of 196.650.
Sage Kellerman led the Spartans with an outstanding score of 9.975 in the anchor position, setting the tone for the team. Olivia Zsarmani and Skyla Schulte also delivered solid performances, scoring 9.950 and 9.850 on vault, respectively. MaKayla Tucker and Gabrielle Stephen contributed scores of 9.825 each, helping the team stay competitive in the competition.
Despite facing tough competition, the Spartans continued to fight until the end. Giana Kalefe led the team with a score of 9.900 on beam in the third rotation, showcasing her consistency and skill throughout the season. In the final rotation, Michigan State finished strong with a score of 49.550 on the floor, earning four scores of 9.900 or better.
Individual qualifiers Nikki Smith and Skyla Schulte will represent Michigan State at the 2024 NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas on April 18th. The team may have fallen short in the regional final, but their impressive season and individual achievements are a testament to their hard work and dedication.
