Young gymnasts shine at “Wings and Springs” In-House Meet
The young gymnasts of Martha’s Vineyard showcased their skills at the recent “Wings and Springs” In-House Gymnastics meet, organized by Island Gymnastics director Beth Goodell. Close to 25 girls, ranging from ages 6 to 14, competed in events such as the balance beam, bars, vault, and floor, much to the delight of the 100-plus family members in attendance.
Team Bronze A, comprised of girls ages 9-12, took home first place with a total score of 105.85 points, while Team Silver and Team Bronze B finished in second and third place, respectively. Goodell expressed her pride in the girls’ performance, noting how the competition highlighted the teamwork and support within the gymnastics community.
Meanwhile, the MVRHS boys tennis team continued their winning streak by defeating both Monomoy and Nauset with a score of 5-0 in each match. The Vineyarders, led by head Coach Nicole Macy, displayed strong performances in singles and doubles matches, showcasing their chemistry and skill on the court.
On the sailing front, the MVRHS sailing team secured a victory over Nantucket, further solidifying their 11-7 record for the season. Despite returning only one varsity starter, the team has shown resilience and determination in their races, with hopes of qualifying for the NESSA team racing championship.
Looking ahead, MVRHS announced plans to host summer sports clinics for Island youth, including soccer, field hockey, football, and girls basketball. With a lineup of experienced coaches leading the clinics, young athletes will have the opportunity to hone their skills and enjoy a fun-filled summer of sports.
Overall, the sports scene on Martha’s Vineyard is thriving, with young athletes showcasing their talents and dedication in various competitions and events. The future looks bright for these rising stars as they continue to excel in their respective sports.
