LSU Gymnastics Captures First National Championship in Program History
In a thrilling and historic moment for LSU gymnastics, the Tigers captured their first national championship in program history on Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth, Texas. After making the NCAA Tournament for the 33rd time this season, LSU finally achieved their ultimate goal with a stellar performance that showcased their resilience and determination.
The Tigers got off to a strong start on the floor exercise, with senior standout Haleigh Bryant leading the way with a near-perfect score of 9.9375. Despite a shaky second event on the vault, which saw three scores in the 9.8s, LSU managed to maintain their lead heading into the final two rotations.
As the competition heated up, the momentum shifted to the Utah Utes, who took the lead heading into the last rotation with the top three teams separated by less than two tenths of a point. However, LSU refused to back down, delivering a solid performance on the uneven parallel bars to stay in contention.
The pressure was on as the Tigers faced the balance beam in the final rotation. Despite a fall from Savannah Schoenherr, LSU rose to the occasion with Aleah Finnegan scoring a remarkable 9.95 to secure the national title with a total score of 198.225. Cal finished in second place with a score of 197.85, followed by Utah in third with a 197.8 and Florida in fourth with a 197.4375.
The victory was a testament to LSU’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity. Despite facing challenges throughout the competition, the Tigers remained focused and determined, ultimately achieving their long-awaited goal of winning a national championship. Congratulations to LSU gymnastics on this historic achievement!
