Atlee Senior Kelly Thurman Named 2024 All-Metro Gymnast of the Year
Kelly Thurman, a senior at Atlee High School, has been named the 2024 All-Metro gymnast of the year, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Karly Thurman, who won the same accolade in 2021. Gymnastics runs deep in the Thurman family, with Kelly starting the sport at a young age because of her sisters’ influence.
This was Kelly’s first year competing on Atlee’s high school team after previously participating in club gymnastics. Despite being a senior, she made a significant impact on the team, leading them to a nearly flawless season with just one loss. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she excelled in the all-around competition, scoring points in all four events: balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars, and vault.
Coach Lee Withers, who has known the Thurman family for years, praised Kelly for her stellar performance and positive attitude. He had been encouraging her to join the high school team for years, and she finally did in her senior year, making a lasting impact on the team and her teammates.
Kelly’s success in gymnastics goes beyond just winning awards. She values the lessons and experiences she has gained from the sport, which she plans to carry with her after she graduates in the spring. With a glowing attitude and a passion for the sport, Kelly Thurman has proven herself to be a standout athlete and a valuable member of the Atlee High School gymnastics team.
