Outstanding Gymnasts Shine in Long Island Championships

Middle Country junior gymnast Hannah Hughes has been named Newsday Gymnast of the Year for the third consecutive season, capping off an impressive year of accomplishments.

Hughes started her winning streak at the team championships at Whitman High School on Oct. 30, where she dominated with a meet-best all-around score of 38.475. She also took home individual victories on beam, vault, and floor, helping Middle Country secure its first Suffolk title since 2003.

Just four days later, Hughes continued her winning ways at the county’s individual championship meet, claiming her second consecutive Suffolk all-around title with a score of 38.200. Her victories on vault and floor solidified her status as a top gymnast in the region.

Despite being unable to defend her state all-around title and back-to-back state vault titles due to an injury, Hughes’s coach Melissa Valentino praised her hard work and dedication throughout the season. Valentino expressed confidence in Hughes’s ability to come back strong for her senior year.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Hughes is also a standout student-athlete, excelling in academics, community service, and leadership roles. Valentino described her as the “whole package,” highlighting her well-rounded abilities both on and off the mat.

Other notable gymnasts recognized by Newsday include Nassau Gymnast of the Year Marisa Schlossman, Leah Chin from Syosset, Isabella Field from Bay Shore/Islip, Bayla Goldberg from Smithtown, and Lindsey Kutchens from West Babylon. Melissa Valentino of Middle Country was named Newsday Coach of the Year for leading her team to a successful season.
