Gabby Douglas Makes Comeback at American Classic, Qualifies for U.S. Championships
Gabby Douglas, the three-time Olympic gold medalist, made a triumphant return to competitive gymnastics at the American Classic in Katy, Texas, on Saturday. Her last gymnastics competition was eight years ago at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she helped her team secure the gold medal.
Despite finishing 10th in the all-around competition, Douglas showcased her skills on the vault and the balance beam, qualifying her to compete in these two events at the upcoming U.S. Championships. To compete in all four events at nationals, she will need to file a petition.
Jade Carey, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the floor exercise, won the all-around competition at the American Classic. While this competition may not directly impact Douglas’ chances of making the Paris team, it was a crucial stepping stone in her comeback journey.
Douglas faced some challenges during the competition, including a shaky start on the floor exercise. However, she impressed with a strong performance on the vault, scoring a 14.000. Her signature event, the uneven bars, still needs some work, but she delivered a clutch performance on the balance beam to secure her spot at the U.S. Championships.
At 28, Douglas was the oldest athlete on the competition floor, but her determination and skill were evident throughout the event. Her comeback was initially delayed due to a positive Covid test earlier this year, but she remained focused on her goal of returning to the Olympics.
With the next qualification event, the Core Hydration Classic, approaching in May, Douglas and other gymnasts are gearing up for the opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games in Paris. If selected, Douglas could become the first American woman since Dominique Dawes to make three Olympic teams, joining the ranks of elite gymnasts like Simone Biles. The road to Paris will culminate at the Olympic trials in June, where the final team will be decided.
