High School Gymnastics Meet Preview: Reigning Champions Look to Repeat
The stage is set for an exciting two-day LHSAA gymnastics meet at Baton Rouge High School, where reigning local champions BRHS (boys) and Dutchtown (girls) will be looking to defend their titles. However, with the numbers game at play, both teams will face challenges as they aim for victory.
Dutchtown coach Erin Bennett shared insights into her team’s preparation, emphasizing the importance of refining their routines to secure those crucial tenths of a point that can make all the difference in a close competition. With a mix of experienced gymnasts and newcomers who have transitioned from cheerleading to gymnastics, Dutchtown’s lineup is a blend of talent and potential.
The competition kicks off on Friday with the boys’ event, featuring around 25 competitors. On Saturday, the girls take center stage with approximately 190 competitors scheduled to compete in four sessions throughout the day. The Level 8 competition in the evening will bring the annual meet to a thrilling conclusion.
Despite a decrease in overall numbers due to conflicting regional club events and the absence of certain schools, the competition promises to be fierce. Top returning finishers like Dwayne Johnson from St. Augustine and Mallory Mitchell from Dutchtown are expected to showcase their skills and compete for top honors in their respective levels.
As the teams gear up for the challenge, all eyes will be on BRHS and Dutchtown to see if they can maintain their winning streaks. With talented gymnasts like Jonathan Fauria, Quinn Roberson, and Landon Simien leading the charge, the stage is set for a weekend of high-flying action and intense competition at the LHSAA gymnastics meet.
