Belgian Junior Gymnasts Win Bronze at European Championships
The Belgian junior girls made their mark at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rimini, Italy, by clinching the bronze medal in the team classification. Louise Dupont, Sien Ghekiere, Liese Vieuxtemps, Silke Hoste, and Katie Baert put up a stellar performance, scoring a total of 148.662 points to secure their spot on the podium.
Individually, the Belgian gymnasts also shone bright, with Sien Ghekiere leading the pack with an eighth-place finish in the all-around competition, earning 49.532 points. Dupont followed closely behind in ninth place with a score of 49.099. The French gymnast Elena Colas claimed the top spot with a score of 53.265.
The Belgian team’s success continued as they qualified for four apparatus finals scheduled for Sunday. Ghekiere will compete in the bars final, while Dupont and Vieuxtemps will showcase their skills on the beam. Vieuxtemps will also vie for a medal in the floor final.
Meanwhile, in the senior women’s category, Maellyse Brassart secured a ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris by finishing eleventh in the all-around competition. However, it was a challenging competition for Nina Derwael, who faced setbacks on the uneven bars and beam, missing out on the apparatus finals.
Despite the ups and downs, the Belgian team’s performance at the European Championships was commendable, with promising talents making their mark on the international stage. The future looks bright for Belgian gymnastics as they continue to strive for excellence in the sport.
