Stillwater Makes History with First Class 6A Girls Golf State Championship Win
The atmosphere at Stillwater Country Club was electric as locals gathered to witness history being made on Tuesday afternoon. The Stillwater girls golf team secured the school’s first-ever state championship in girls golf, and they did it in front of their hometown crowd.
The Pioneers carded a total score of 615 to win the Class 6A title by 11 strokes, dethroning two-time defending state champion Jenks. The runner-up Trojans shot a 626, while Edmond North took third with a 641.
Coach Angela Knott, in just her second year at the helm, emphasized the importance of positive self-talk and resilience in the face of adversity. She watched proudly as her team rose to the occasion and delivered under pressure.
Three Stillwater golfers finished in the top 10, but it was Norman North sophomore Juliana Hong who claimed the individual title with a 1-over 141 through two rounds. Hong, relatively new to golf compared to her peers, showed composure beyond her years as she navigated the challenging course.
As the final results came in, Hong was surprised to learn she had held the lead throughout the tournament. Her father, Yang Eric Hong, shared their family’s journey in the sport, highlighting Juliana’s rapid ascent to the top ranks of high school golf.
In the Class 4A tournament, Fort Gibson’s Layne Ailshie staged a comeback to win her second individual state title and lead her team to victory. Ailshie’s resilience under pressure and Fort Gibson’s dominant performance showcased the talent and determination of Oklahoma’s young golfers.
The Pioneers and Tigers celebrated their triumphs with their community, basking in the support of family, friends, and fans. The future looks bright for these rising stars as they continue to make their mark on the Oklahoma golf scene.
