Rory McIlroy Makes Zurich Classic Debut Alongside Shane Lowry, Reveals Past Offers from Bubba Watson
Rory McIlroy has made his debut at the Zurich Classic this week in New Orleans, teaming up with his Olympic teammate Shane Lowry. The four-time major champion revealed that he had turned down offers from Bubba Watson in the past to compete in the event, but this time he decided to give it a shot.
McIlroy and Lowry, who were part of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team last year, decided to enter the tournament after a celebratory evening following their victory over the American team. The duo has impressed as a partnership, carding a bogey-free 11-under-par 61 in the opening round and following up with a solid second-round two-under 70 to share the clubhouse lead at 13-under.
The format of the tournament includes better ball and alternate shot rounds, with McIlroy and Lowry showcasing their skills in both formats. The pair will continue to compete in the better ball format for Saturday’s third round before switching back to alternate shot for the final round on Sunday.
McIlroy expressed his enjoyment of playing in a more relaxed atmosphere after a busy schedule, and it seems to be paying off as he and Lowry are currently leading the field. Golf fans will be eagerly watching to see if the duo can maintain their strong performance and secure a victory at the Zurich Classic.
