Former Rangers Star and Scottish Footie Presenter Play Old Course at St Andrews in Reverse
Former Rangers star Kenny Miller and Scottish footie presenter Gordon Duncan were among a select group of lucky golfers who had the opportunity to play the Old Course at St Andrews this week. The famous links underwent a major transformation as part of an event to mark 50 years since the St Andrews Links Trust took over custodianship of the course.
Miller and Duncan, along with their friends Darren Leslie and Ell Parish, took on the challenging test of the Old Course, which was made even more difficult by playing it in reverse. The historic clockwise routing, with the holes played in reverse order, provided a unique and challenging experience for the players.
The Old Course was originally intended to be played in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions back in the 1400s, with outward and inward holes played to shared greens and using the same fairways. Nowadays, the reverse routing is only used for an annual competition limited to a small number of local club members.
Despite the tough weather conditions during their round, Duncan and Miller both enjoyed the experience. Duncan described playing St Andrews backwards in a hurricane as expected for a golfer of his limited ability, while Miller celebrated a “top day” at the Home of Golf.
The St Andrews Links Trust hopes to make the Old Course Reversed event a yearly occurrence to give more golfers the chance to enjoy the unique experience. With the success of this year’s event, it’s sure to be a popular attraction for golfers looking for a new challenge on one of the world’s most famous courses.
