Exciting Weekend for Cal Sports Teams: Bears Shine in Golf, Water Polo, and Beach Volleyball
It was a busy and successful weekend for various Cal sports teams, with standout performances across the board.
In men’s golf, the Cal Bears finished an impressive second at the Pac-12 championships held at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Arizona. Led by Ethan Fang, who tied for third place, Sampson Zheng in sixth, and Eric Lee in 13th, the Bears put on a strong showing. Fang’s performance was particularly notable, marking the best finish by a Cal golfer since Collin Morikawa’s victory in 2019. Despite trailing eventual champions Arizona State by just three strokes entering the final round, the Bears put up a solid fight with consistent rounds between 360 and 370, finishing with a 365 on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Cal women’s water polo team secured a runner-up spot at the MPSF championships, falling to No. 1 UCLA in the final. Standout performances from Rozanne Voorvelt and Mary Dempsey, who scored three goals and two goals respectively, highlighted the team’s strong showing. With the NCAA Championships set to be hosted at Spieker Aquatics Complex for the first time, the Bears are gearing up for more exciting competition ahead.
In beach volleyball, Cal earned a program-best No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament, marking their third consecutive appearance. The Bears will face off against Long Beach State in the first round, aiming to build on their first-ever victory at the event from last season.
With multiple Cal teams making waves in their respective sports, it’s clear that the Bears are a force to be reckoned with in collegiate athletics. Fans can look forward to more thrilling performances as these teams continue to showcase their talent on the national stage.
