Lee Westwood’s Struggles in LIV Golf Highlight Contrasting Career Trajectory

Lee Westwood, once a dominant force on the PGA Tour, is currently experiencing a rough patch in LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed league. Through six events, the former world No. 1 golfer has failed to earn a single point, placing him dead last in the standings alongside three other players.

Despite his struggles, Westwood is safe from relegation for now, thanks to his role as captain of the Majesticks GC. However, the same cannot be said for Chase Koepka, James Piot, Sihwan Kim, and Jediah Morgan, who were recently dropped from the league due to poor performance.

Westwood’s decision to join LIV Golf in 2022 was driven by financial incentives, as he acknowledged the opportunity for a pay increase at this stage in his career. However, his move to the controversial league has led to a significant drop in the Official World Golf Rankings, where he currently sits in 1,163rd place.

Despite his struggles in LIV Golf, Westwood remains a decorated golfer with 44 professional tournament wins and multiple Ryder Cup victories. His criticism of the OWGR for favoring PGA Tour players reflects his frustration with the current ranking system.

As Westwood continues to navigate his challenges in LIV Golf, it remains to be seen how the league will address the performance of its captains in the future. With potential rule changes on the horizon, Westwood may need to adapt to stay competitive in this new golfing landscape.
