Jay Bothroyd aims to increase diversity in golf and support Prostate Cancer UK’s Big Golf Race

Former England striker Jay Bothroyd is on a mission to make golf more accessible and diverse for young players. The ex-footballer, who started his career at Arsenal and played for various clubs including Cardiff and QPR, has swapped the penalty area for the fairway in a bid to break down socio-economic barriers in the sport.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bothroyd found solace in golf while in Japan, where he started to take a keen interest in the game. Now, he hosts a YouTube channel with PGA pro Trey Niven, aiming to showcase golf as a sport for everyone, regardless of background or financial status.

Bothroyd’s initiative, the OuttaBoundz Show, focuses on inclusivity and fun, encouraging young people to try out golf and enjoy the game. By partnering with organizations like the Golf Foundation, Bothroyd hopes to provide opportunities for those who may not have access to equipment or resources.

The former striker’s passion for golf is also fueled by personal reasons, as his father battled prostate cancer last year. Bothroyd is now supporting Prostate Cancer UK’s Big Golf Race fundraising challenge, aiming to raise awareness and funds for research into the disease, particularly its impact on black men.

Through his efforts, Bothroyd is not only promoting diversity in golf but also advocating for a worthy cause. By showing young players that golf can be fun and inclusive, he is paving the way for a more diverse and accessible future for the sport.
