Brandel Chamblee criticizes PGA Tour players for lack of support for Rory McIlroy in LIV Golf fight
Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee has criticized players on the PGA Tour for not supporting Rory McIlroy in his fight against the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league. McIlroy had been vocal in his opposition to the breakaway league, but Chamblee feels that he was left to fight the battle alone.
Chamblee expressed his disappointment in the lack of support for McIlroy, stating, “I felt like Rory didn’t get the support that he needed. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that players were selfish, but I felt like Rory was out there and was a force against the source of the money for LIV, and he was a formidable source for the PGA Tour, and he didn’t get the support from any of the players.”
Chamblee specifically called out top players like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, and Xander Schauffele for not backing McIlroy up on his strong views against LIV Golf. He believes that more players should have spoken out in support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game.
McIlroy, who had previously been a vocal critic of LIV Golf, has since softened his stance on the matter after stepping down from the Policy Board. He admitted to changing his tune on LIV players returning to the PGA Tour, indicating a shift in his perspective on the controversial issue.
Chamblee’s comments highlight the divide within the golf community over the emergence of the Saudi-backed league and the implications it has for the future of the sport. As the debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how players will navigate their roles in shaping the direction of professional golf.
