LIV Golf’s Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton Eligible for Ryder Cup with Conditions: DP World Tour CEO Discusses Future of Golf and Unity Talks
In a surprising turn of events, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, who recently made the switch to LIV Golf, are still eligible to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup next year. Despite their move to the Saudi-backed circuit, DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings has clarified that they are not exploiting any loopholes and are still subject to the rules of the tour.
Both Rahm and Hatton are required to play at least four DP World Tour events a season, pay fines, and serve bans in order to maintain their eligibility for the prestigious Ryder Cup. Kinnings emphasized that these rules apply to all members and will not be altered to accommodate the players who have joined LIV Golf.
The situation arose following a case in April 2023 where 12 players appealed against fines and bans for participating in LIV’s inaugural event. Some players, including Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood, chose to resign from the DP World Tour, while Henrik Stenson was removed as Ryder Cup captain.
Kinnings also provided insight into the ongoing talks between the DP World Tour, PGA Tour, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund regarding a framework agreement. He expressed that he does not expect golf to be unified until 2026, highlighting the complexities of the negotiations and the need for compromise among all parties involved.
Despite the challenges ahead, Kinnings acknowledged Rory McIlroy’s vision for a ‘World Tour’ and the importance of integrating team golf into the discussions. He emphasized the need for flexibility and compromise in order to find a solution that satisfies all stakeholders and brings unity to the sport.
As the golfing world awaits further developments, the future of the sport remains uncertain but filled with possibilities for collaboration and innovation.
