Bryson DeChambeau sets clubhouse target with opening-round 65 at The Masters; reflects on past comments about Augusta National
Bryson DeChambeau made a strong statement at The Masters with an impressive opening-round 65, setting the clubhouse target at Augusta National. The former US Open champion’s round included a brilliant birdie burst on the back nine, with five birdies in a six-hole stretch from the 12th hole.
DeChambeau’s performance was particularly noteworthy given his past comments about Augusta National. In 2020, he caused controversy by referring to the iconic venue as a ‘par-67 course’ due to his ability to reach all the par-fives in two shots. However, DeChambeau acknowledged his mistake and expressed a newfound respect for the golf course.
“I said it, and I respect people’s opinions on it. For me, I have a level of respect for this golf course that’s a little bit different than a couple years ago,” DeChambeau said. “Clearly today was a great test of golf, and I was able to conquer a very difficult golf course today.”
DeChambeau currently holds a one-shot lead over world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who made a bogey-free start to his Masters campaign. Additionally, 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett made a remarkable return to competitive golf after a seven-month injury layoff, carding a four-under 68 in his first round.
With three more days of exciting golf ahead, DeChambeau, Scheffler, and Willett are among the top contenders to watch at The Masters. Fans can catch all the action live on Sky Sports Golf throughout the week. Don’t miss out on the drama and excitement as the tournament unfolds at Augusta National.
