Formula One 2024 Season Update: 20 Grands Prix Still to Run
The 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship is shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory, with plenty of drama and surprises still to come. With 20 grands prix still to run, the same number of races as the entire 2017 season, there are 568 points still up for grabs, more than any other complete season prior to 2019.
Despite the abundance of points available, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has already declared that the battle for both championships is over, with Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing the overwhelming favorites to clinch both titles. Verstappen, who has won three of the four races so far this season, leads the drivers’ standings by 13 points over teammate Sergio Pérez, while Red Bull Racing holds a 21-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship.
However, not everyone is ready to concede defeat just yet. Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc leading their charge, is hot on the heels of Red Bull Racing in both points and pace, keeping the competition alive and well.
Meanwhile, at Red Bull, motorsport adviser Helmut Marko has heaped praise on Yuki Tsunoda, likening his recent performances to those of the sport’s greats. Tsunoda, who scored a valuable point for Red Bull Racing with a tenth-place finish at his home race in Japan, has been impressing with his consistency and improved confidence on track.
As the drivers turn their attention to the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix, concerns have been raised about the decision to run a sprint race at the Shanghai International Circuit, which is returning to the calendar after a five-year absence. With only one hour of practice before sprint qualifying, drivers are wary of the risks involved in racing at a track they haven’t visited in years.
Despite the challenges ahead, the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship promises to deliver plenty of excitement and intrigue as the season unfolds.
