Maximus Powers to Victory in Grand National for Willie Mullins
In a thrilling and unforgettable Grand National race at Aintree, I Am Maximus powered to victory to hand legendary trainer Willie Mullins just a second triumph in the prestigious event. Nineteen years after Hedgehunter’s victory in 2005, Mullins celebrated as jockey Paul Townend guided the joint-favorite 7-1 shot to glory on Saturday.
Townend, who had previously won the Gold Cup last month, expressed his disbelief at winning the Grand National, stating, “Gold Cups are Gold Cups, Grade Ones are hard to win but the Grand National – it’s just a bit different!”
The race saw Delta Work finish second at 28-1, followed by Minella Indo in third place at the same odds. Galvin and Kitty’s Light rounded out the top five finishers in the race. Despite the competitive field, all 32 horses that started the race were confirmed to be safe and well by the Jockey Club.
Defending champion Derek Fox’s hopes for a back-to-back victory were dashed early on as his horse, Corach Rambler, fell at the first hurdle. The race saw several lead changes and unexpected moments, including Glengouly setting the early pace and Mr Incredible falling at “The Chair.”
As the race neared its conclusion, Galia Des Liteaux held a narrow lead before unseating its rider, Michael O’Sullivan. In a dramatic finish, I Am Maximus surged ahead to claim a dominant victory, leaving Rachael Blackmore and Minella Indo to settle for third place.
The Grand National delivered excitement and surprises, showcasing the thrill and unpredictability that make it one of the most anticipated events in horse racing. Stay tuned for more updates on this unforgettable race.
