Former F1 Team Boss Ted Toleman Passes Away
The Formula 1 world is mourning the loss of Ted Toleman, the founder and team principal of the eponymous F1 outfit, who passed away at the age of 86. Toleman, who had been battling a long illness, died overnight on April 10 in Manila, the Philippines. He is survived by his wife Maiti and son Michael.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his sadness at the news of Toleman’s passing, saying, “He gave so much to Formula 1 and his achievements and legacy will always be part of our history. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
Toleman’s journey in Formula 1 was a storied one. After finding success in junior categories, he made the leap to F1 in the early 1980s. It was with Toleman Racing that a young Ayrton Senna made his F1 debut, going on to achieve legendary status in the sport. The duo made headlines with a remarkable second-place finish at the rain-soaked Monaco Grand Prix in 1984, marking the team’s best-ever result in F1.
Throughout his five seasons in F1, Toleman’s team scored two more podium finishes with Senna at the helm, as well as a pole position at the 1985 German Grand Prix. Toleman eventually sold the team to Benetton, paving the way for a new chapter in the squad’s history.
Toleman’s legacy in F1 extends beyond his success on the track. The team also served as a launching pad for future F1 stars like Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds, who began their illustrious careers with Toleman Racing.
As the F1 community remembers Ted Toleman, his contributions to the sport will always be cherished and celebrated.
