England No 8 Billy Vunipola Arrested and Fined in Mallorca Incident
England and Saracens No 8 Billy Vunipola found himself in hot water after an incident in Mallorca led to his arrest and fine for “disobedience” and resisting arrest. The 31-year-old forward appeared in court following an altercation at a bar in Palma, where he was tasered twice by police and it took eight officers to subdue him.
Vunipola maintained his innocence, stating that there was “no violence, no fight, and I did not threaten anybody at any stage.” He was charged with resisting the law and fined €240 after a brief trial. The Spanish police investigation has since been closed, and Vunipola is flying back to the UK.
Saracens, Vunipola’s club, released a statement acknowledging the incident and stating that they would handle the matter internally. Vunipola is expected to leave Saracens at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to France.
The England international, who has 75 caps for his country, made his Test debut in 2013 and is not currently part of the England squad. Despite the off-field incident, Vunipola made an appearance as a substitute in Saracens’ recent victory over Bath.
Saracens are currently second in the English Premiership and are aiming for their sixth league title in the last 10 seasons. With just two rounds of regular season games left before the playoffs, Vunipola’s actions off the field have raised questions about his future with the club and his potential move to France.
