JMU Football Spring Transfer Portal Tracker: Departures Update
JMU Football Sees Several Players Enter Transfer Portal
As spring football practices ramp up, the JMU football team has seen a number of players enter the transfer portal in recent weeks. The Dukes, coming off a successful 2023 season, are looking to reload and make a run at the FCS playoffs once again.
One of the notable departures is defensive tackle Tyrique Tucker. Tucker, who played in all 13 games last season with five starts, was expected to be a key contributor on the defensive line in 2024. With three years of eligibility remaining, Tucker’s decision to enter the portal comes as a surprise to many fans.
Running back Sammy Malignaggi and Solomon Vanhorse are also among the players who have entered the transfer portal. Malignaggi, a backup running back and kick returner, saw limited action last season and was unlikely to see much playing time in 2024. Vanhorse, a versatile weapon on offense and special teams, was expected to be the third running back on the depth chart behind Ayo Adeyi and George Pettaway.
In addition to the offensive and defensive departures, tight end Collin Carroll, offensive lineman Wesley Bostic, wide receiver Nakai Poole, and offensive lineman Aaron Gunn have also entered the transfer portal. These players, who were all reserves or backups, are looking for opportunities to contribute elsewhere.
As the spring progresses, JMU will continue to evaluate its roster and make adjustments as needed. With several key players entering the transfer portal, the Dukes will need to rely on their depth and incoming recruits to fill the void left by these departures.
