Teenager’s Campaign Leads to Skateboarding Being Added to Approved GCSE Sports List in Wales
A teenager’s disappointment turned into a successful campaign as skateboarding is now included in the list of approved GCSE sports in Wales. Osian George, a 15-year-old skateboarder from Cross Hands, Carmarthenshire, started his journey in the sport at just five years old and has since competed regularly, even coming second in last year’s Urban Games in Cardiff.
Osian’s disappointment at not being able to skateboard for his GCSE led him to campaign for change. His efforts paid off as Qualifications Wales added 13 new sports to the approved list for GCSE level physical education, including skateboarding, BMX, shooting, kickboxing, and wakeboarding.
Osian expressed his happiness at the inclusion of skateboarding, stating that it will provide opportunities for young skateboarders to excel. He believes that the new addition will not only enhance their skills but also boost their academic attainment.
Sam Horler, Welsh hub and operations lead for Skateboard GB, described the inclusion of skateboarding as “long overdue” and emphasized the positive impact it will have on the sport and the community. He highlighted the resilience and determination of skateboarders and expressed his excitement for the future of the sport.
Osian hopes to see more skate parks opened in Wales to support new learners and help them thrive in the sport. He believes that the inclusion of skateboarding in school PE will encourage more young people to participate and improve their physical and mental health.
Overall, the addition of skateboarding to the list of approved GCSE sports in Wales is a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and diversity in physical education. It not only recognizes alternative sports but also provides young athletes like Osian with the opportunity to pursue their passion and excel in both their sport and academics.
